I’m not a pastor. I’m a designer, creator, small business owner, business leader, and entrepreneur who loves Jesus. I started a branding agency over 25 years ago and earned some useful certifications along the way.
Every entrepreneur and faith-driven professional’s journey has highs and lows. I’m writing this for when you struggle with the business and when you wrestle with success.
Fifty years ago, I would have been called a business owner.
I love God’s Word, and I love being an entrepreneur. The risk and the rewards appeal to me.
I view my work as worship—but I don’t worship entrepreneurship (or entrepreneurs, or the idea of innovation) as fervently as our culture does.
My work and how I practice entrepreneurship is an expression of worship, solely for the glory of my God and the good of others.
Romans 12:1-2 reads
12:1 And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice–the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. 2 Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God's will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. (NLT)
Certain aspects of entrepreneurship are teachable, but much of it is a gift. It’s innate, a discipline, a way of thinking. If you’re going to practice entrepreneurship as a way to worship, you need to think about it differently.
Giving yourself entirely to God is the way to worship him. Not just the part of you that goes to church (if you do) or the time you spend doing service (if you do); but all of you—your mind, body, and spirit—giving yourself to Him as thoroughly as you do to the ideas, businesses, and innovation you pursue every day.
I don’t want to worship entrepreneurship. I want to worship as an entrepreneur. On my knees, I want to approach entrepreneurship from the perspective of worship in humility, giving thanks to God for the risks and rewards!
Do you feel the same way? Let’s share our successes, struggles, and insights into living a life of faith in business. The only destination I know that this journey leads to is eternity.
Let’s follow this path and take this journey together! Leave a comment and tell me what appeals to you the most about being a faith-driven entrepreneur or professional.
